啊! 好久沒好好翻一本字典了..
我很喜歡一本著色簿, 那是小時候的事了。 那本著色簿, 應該是我到樓下的校園書房, 什麼都翻的時候看到, 跑回家 要求說我要買的。 校園書房, 走的是基督教 西方文化格調, 書堆裡, '當時'總比附近其他書店, 有更多的外文資訊; 我喜歡的這本著色簿, 寫著外文, 畫的是鳥。 為了符合著色用途, 在打開有A3尺寸, 那樣大的頁面, 每隻鳥都活現的 統治我視覺的眼。 他們的對應顏色, 就印刷在簿子封面， 而我記得, 我的彩色筆 其實捨不得 往他們身上塗
或怕我技術不好, 或我心知這是褻瀆
..但我勤翻字典。 在我那時候的年紀, 我已知道'英文'字, 只要字典不離手, 每個字 都有辦法, '能'在字典裡找到。 我就按照墊版上, ABC字型的排序, 賣力的 組織組合的順序, 在字典裡找字去
但我喜歡的花鳥, 多是有專有名詞, 或當時 我還不知道 生物有'學名'這種東西。 這些字 並不是隨便一本字典 有辦法提供的。 於是一些印象當中 似曾相識的'字', 就蟄伏在腦海。 我的人生活到四十歲, 還在用字典..
但, 好久沒好好翻一本字典了。 現在, 每天都在查字的是 wiki, 眼睛沒離開螢幕, 字典就在 yahoo.com。 當節奏放慢, 我很喜歡上 dictionary.com; 雖然 用'英文'解釋'英文單字', 得先禱告 此舉別引發更多霧水才好； 在他的介面, 深入可詳查單字的源由, 輕鬆則有多元的'字的'趣事
也逢應景, 這幾天 在他介面上, 解釋幾個和耶穌誕生 有關的單字。 包括 Magi, Myrrh 和 Frankincense; 而 Nativity在這 他也有沒用'大'寫的。 Myrrh 和 Frankincense 是兩種香料植物: 沒藥 和 乳香, Commiphora myrrha 和 Boswellia sacra, 均取其樹脂, 均原產於 阿拉伯世界, 均為 Burseraceae 科。
若延伸 Burseraceae這科的中譯, 就很頭痛; 這科為我們熟悉的; 是蜜餞 橄欖 Canarium album (所以會翻譯為 橄欖科)； 但是 我們最熟悉的 橄欖, 卻是榨油的 Olive/ Olea europaea, 他在 Oleaceae 科, (Olea 在這是 Oleaceae的模式屬; 茉莉 桂花 都在此科), 卻不翻譯 橄欖科.. 中文名稱 還 真不是一個'亂'字 可以交代。 而 Myrrh 這字延伸, 可找到 Myrrhis odorata, 即 Cicely, 常聽到的一個字
..好久沒好好翻一本字典了。 那些陪我長大, 書頁薄如翼, 印滿密密麻麻的字, 植物動物的名字, 經常不出現在裡面; 但這幾本字典,還在身邊, 翻開時 不時會掉出花辦, 飄出草藥混合玫瑰 乾燥後的味道..

MAGI: Though Jesus' birth got off to a rough start, things definitely started looking up once the Magi arrived. Outside the Nativity Story, Magi refers to a class of Zoroastrian priests in ancient Media and Persia, reputed to have supernatural powers. The word is thought to originate as moyu in the ancient Persian language Avestan. Within the Christmas story, the Bible depicts these Magi or "Wise Men of the East" as presenting gifts to the Baby Jesus. But today "magi" can also mean astrologer.
MYRRH: Though the exact number of Magi present at the nativity is unknown, biblical scholars assume that there were three based on the number of gifts they brought. One of these was myrrh, a bitter-tasting resin gum traditionally made from small thorny trees of the genus Commiphora. Exodus 30:23 cites myrrh as a key ingredient in the holy anointing oil used to consecrate Aaron and his sons as priests. Myrrh as a gift of the Magi symbolically anointed the infant Jesus as a religious leader.
FRANKINCENSE: From perfuming the sanctuary in Exodus 30:43-38 to aiding prayer in Revelations 8:4, frankincense makes numerous appearances in both the Old and New Testaments. What is it? Frankincense (a.k.a. olibanum) is a gum resin made from Boswellia trees native to Asia and Africa. It can be burned as incense or used directly on the skin as perfume. Etymologically, frankincense is from the Old French, franc- means "noble or true" referring to the purity of the "incense" it describes.
