IMPOSSIBLE GRAVE
_______________________________________________________
Wasn’t six feet—wasn’t even four, but it was done.
The others were waiting, were gathered around the impossible grave without the pretension of lanterns and such. Joel jumped in and looked around, hands on hips, kicking the walls.
“Deep enough for me.”
They grabbed his arms and pulled him out before his imagination could take hold and unleash horrid scenes that would pull at his eyelids during the night. But it was done.
ANIMALS
_______________________________________________________
We are living
We are living here
Just like animals
We love the darkness
This is happening
This is happening
We are living
We are living here
In oblivion
We are floating
In the afterglow
In the afterglow
In this family
This is everything
We are living
We are living here
JOEL FOUND HIS ANGEL COWERING IN THE GARDEN
_______________________________________________________
Joel found his angel cowering in the garden—a pathetic ball of shivering feathers. “Fuck me,” he mumbled, disgusted with the possibility now realized. Out came the shovel. It sat and watched as the stars hummed back a melody to the rhythm of digging, of removing earth to make room for the impossible. The ground was hard and he had to break past the frost and frozen layers. He figured he’d have to break the wings to get them in, to get it to fit. This, however, was not without a struggle. Joel approached, throwing his shadow upon the angel that balled itself tightly and lowered its eyes like a dog. “Come on, get in.” Nothing doing. Only stared out from under itself, wrapping its wings around the shoulders to the chest. “Get in,” Joel repeated, same pitch, same determination, same mission. The backyard was dark but Joel’s eyes were dilated from adrenaline and his eyes were sharp, sharp enough to notice what the angel had clutched in its fist. “What you doing with that?” Joel’s voice quivered and broke, now on the defensive. Slowly and with calculated determination, he shifted position, came up strong and stood awkwardly and broken in front of Joel, both like statues in the garden, casting out long shadows from the light of distant stars. Its eyes still cast down, down towards the pit Joel had dug—a pit that now seemed he dug for himself.
RIOTS
_______________________________________________________
If I’m no less than an easy target
In the face of distant riots
Then our beds won’t keep us quiet
In a scene of distant riots
In a scene of one less tragic
All this rush, all this panic
BROKEN
_______________________________________________________
I am the king of off the cuff
I get so broken on this stuff
I am the only one to run
I get so broken on this stuff
I am so hopeless on the ones
And I get so broken on this stuff
And I will. I’ll die.
Our lives in motion.
Don’t you want another chance
THE ECLIPSE

CRIMES
_______________________________________________________
If you left now
Prints will show
And the stories
Will unfold
If you left now
They will know
And the crime tape
Would unroll
I have made the wish to make the panic calm
Wasn’t enough for you
Crimes can make you wish that you did something wrong
If you left now
Prints will show
All our secrets
They will know
I have made the wish to make the panic calm
Wasn’t enough for you
Crimes can make you wish that you did something wrong
Wasn’t enough for you
Time can sew the stitch to make your motive strong
Wasn’t enough for you
I could make you wish that you did something wrong
THIS IS THE LAST NIGHT
_______________________________________________________
This is the last night of our lives
Waiting to be lifted
This is the last night that we’ll know
There’s nothing left to stop us
But part of you should know that I feel divine
Though all the ones you knew are gone tonight
This is the last night that we’ll know
This is the last night that we’ll see
Waiting to be lifted
And a part of you should know the cost of your goodbye
And all that we could show, our bones will deny
And all that we have known belongs to the night
And one of you will show that you were built to die
REQUIEM
_______________________________________________________
Crushing the things we know
Crushed like broken stones
Crushing the things we know
Crushed like broken bones
Why do you look so sad when you lie to yourself
Crushing the things we know
Why do you look so sad when you lie to yourself
I’m dying up the stairs so why do you look so sad
When you die and I see you
And I am overwhelmed
