♫ Riding on the Equator F e l t , Poem of the River 1987

reading and writing on the Tropic of Cancer in a mood of noon blue.

Spinoza ( 24 Nov. 1632- 21 Feb. 1677)

Epicurus ( 341- 270 BC )

DICKON EDWARDS of Fosca:
I was exposed to Poem Of The River by a couple of floppy-haired fanzine writing boys while staying on their floor in Manchester, during the very early 90s. It was the Lawrence Interregnum, the period after Felt’s last but just before Denim’s first. They somehow had a hissy cassette copy of the Denim demo, and they made me an even hissier offspring. Those were the days when C90 cassettes were like palimpsests of fandom: layer upon layer of noise sealing the status of a rarity.

They also gave me a crash course in the Felt back catalogue, and Riding… was the one song that stood out for me. I loved its warm and friendly organ-wrapped simplicity, the charming duel of jangly guitar solos going round and round in the outro, like a less butch Layla; the funny and poignant lyrics about attempts to seduce waiters. There’s a little of Dylan’s Hammond-y electric era too, particularly those catchy yet bitchy numbers like Positively 4th St. But if I must, I’ll take Felt over Dylan. http://feltadeclaration.tumblr.com/post/12327051360/dickonedwards
